I N S I G H T
Christine grew up in Leipzig, and was exposed to many stunning works of art
by the old masters, and she says that her leisure time was often spent
perusing museums, art galleries and exhibitions. "I was always trying
my hand at what I had seen." she recalls, "and this could involve clay
modeling, carving a piece of timber or drawing with coloured pencils. It was
often suggested that I should go to art college, but within my family the
arts were seen as a hobby, not a vocation." In pursuit of a 'serious' job,
however, Christine went to high school instead and was hoping to go on to
study at university level. Then in 1960, her world was turned upside down
when she and her mother left all of their possessions behind and fled to
